How to Style a Romper
Table Of Contents
Travel Girl Fashion help! A reader asks:
I just bought this cute romper and plan on taking it on every trip. What are some outfit options?
Rompers are a fashion trend that has hit travel circles! Though not something to wear when you’re in countries that mainly have squat toilets, these are versatile clothing pieces that look fab for road trips, cruises, resorts, European travel, or just hanging at home.
Though the terms tend to be interchangeable, a long romper aka, a jumpsuit, is especially versatile because it acts as both a top and pants at the same time. When choosing one for a trip, neutral colors such as black, olive, khaki, navy, or white are generally best. This allows you to wear the romper for more than one activity like sightseeing or dinner out.
However, it can be daunting to know what accessories or shoes to wear with a romper when traveling (or even otherwise).
So we took our reader question and her pick to show you how to style a black romper!
How to Style a Black Short Sleeve Romper
Lane Bryant Knit Kit Crossover Jumpsuit | Sizes 10-28
Lane Bryant Black Romper Pants and Shirt Combo
This stylish Lane Bryant crossover jumpsuit was shared in the TFG Facebook group, an amazing resource for female travelers looking for what to pack or what to wear. As you can see, it’s oh-so-versatile due to the neutral black color and classic styling details.
The pockets allow for some easy storage of a lip gloss, and the crossover neckline drapes across the torso in a flattering manner. The cropped pants are a terrific length to showcase shoes well. The nicest touch has to be the dolman sleeves wich have a shirred drawstring which can go up or down, dependant on the look you’re after—either way, it creates a pretty ruched effect!
It also comes in petite sizing as well! Now, how to style this for travel and pair it with lovely, yet practical pieces? We’re happy to show you just how to wear a black romper!
When it comes to how to rock a romper, they’re so versatile which allows you to play with shoe options. From sandals in the summer to slip-ons, or even ankle boots in the fall/winter, you can truly take this piece through all seasons!
Animal Print Sandals
Naot sandals constantly make our readers top lists for summer shoes, and these have a cork and latex footbed that’s shock-absorbing, with arch support, and are generally dang cute!
These come in many colors, but we love the cheetah print for our black romper above—perfect for some sightseeing and dinner out at a top-rated Tripadvisor restaurant. Believe it or not, animal print shoes are actually neutral and can go well with a number of other shades.
Readers say these are top-notch walking shoes that have cushion yet look great for day to evening looks. These are also a HUGE fave of TFG’s editor-in-chief Alex. (Check out her full review on these sandals!)
The Kirra from Vionic is sleek and chic with a triangular thong-style design and backstrap for stability and adjustability. The microfiber-wrapped, EVA footbed is so soft; you’ll feel like you’re walking on air.
Metallic is another neutral that can add zip to a black romper, pair with some subtle gold jewelry, and voila!
One reader reiterates that “I wear them with black all the time and they look great!” This sandal also comes in other colors as well.

Here are the most cute and comfortable walking sandals for travel!
Neutral Wedge Sandals
Wedges look great with rompers because they instantly dress them up! Your tootsies won’t suffer in wedges either as they would in typical heels because they’re more stable and your feet touch more surface. Excellent for travel!
Naot is one of the most popular brands that combines comfort and style well. The Prophecy’s adjustable ankle straps, a cushioned anatomic footbed, and padded heel cup add effortless comfort all day long.
Classic Ballet Flats
Let this Tory Burch flat make your romper shine with its logo medallion and sleek construction. The leather upper, lined rubber sole, and cushioned footbed means your feet will be comfortable as you walk.
TFG readers rave about these shoes for their look and durability. And if you’re styling a neutral-colored romper, you could easily pluck some of the fun colors offered in these flats to add vim and vigor!
However, be forewarned that flats work best for short bouts of walking, rather than longer periods, which may be just enough time to show off your romper!
