I bought the Sorel Women’s Emelie II Chelsea Boot and have been breaking them in a month prior to my trip. At first they rubbed my upper ankle but now my feet are accustomed and I can wear them all day. Great comfort and beautiful look.
Highly recommend Naturalizer Morrison 2.0 sneakers – they were my surprise win for a two-week trip to Peru. When I wasn’t wearing my Merrills (also a win, but heavy) the lightweight and uber-comfortable Nautalizers were the go-to. I was surprised by just how well they did and how my feet never got tired (even walking on cobblestones). I found them at a Nordstrom Rack and now I’m obsessed with finding more at a similar discount.

I love & appreciate this post. As someone now 63 my feet need more care than ever. They’ve always been a challenge. I was a size 10 out of the gate as a teenager and a wide to boot. I call them Flintstone feet. Just got back from 2 weeks in Greece. I purchased Dr. Scholl’s Time Off sneakers and they were great for wearing all day BUT not much traction and I slipped on marble steps and hurt my back! Bring Mr. Clean Magic Eraser sheets to keep them looking nice!

I just love this site and group! I often come to the site to check on updates and travel lists. I love the recommendations, especially for shoes! I’m 63 and “larger”, so the really enjoyed the posts from those endowed women! Since retiring, I have been feeling frumpy, but the recommendations on this site allowed me to feel fashonable while still being comfortable for a recent 2.5 week trip to Portugal.

I brought the Naot Sabrina sandals on two recent summer trips to Chicago & Boston (in July & August) they were perfect!! In fact they were the only shoes I brought on my Chicago trip and they were all I needed! Thanks for the great suggestions!

I agree with the Taos Star. I am on my second pair. They are comfortable with a little or a lot of walking with absolutely no break in time. And this is coming from someone that has had two foot surgeries, plantar fasciitis and autoimmune arthritis.
Taos might work if you don’t have a narrow foot and a high arch, but I tried 5 different Taos sneakers, including these, and they did not fit. Order up a size and keep your fingers crossed.

I guess everybody’s feet are different, even if they have the same foot type. I have both narrow feet and high arches. My 6 year old Taos sneakers are my most comfortable. I even remove the insoles and use them in other shoes. I’m packing for a European trip now, and my Taos were the first thing I packed. Sorry they don’t work for you.

Vionics are my go to overall, but I’m loving the look of the Adidas cloudfoams. I’ve worn Adidas for work for several years but usually the boost style.

I love my Skechers Go Walk shoes. There was no breaking in period and they are so comfy for my wide foot.
I’m convinced that nothing is more important than comfortable shoes when traveling, and an uncomfortable pair could ruin a trip! I second the recommendation for Skechers Go Walk shoes, I can walk for miles in them.

I very much enjoy all your articles. I have the Sketchers Go Walk in black that I used on a New York Trip last fall for both casual during daytime sightseeing and later with a Karen Kane dress you recommended for evening. Loved them both and would highly recommend them.
Love my Dr. Schools slip on in gray. I am on my third pair! Great for walking, lightweight, and can be worn with pants, skirts, shorts, jeans and more!
Wore the Taos sneaker in Ireland this May and never had sore feet, blisters, anything! Super comfortable and a great choice. I debated for two months what to wear and so

Shoes!! They are such a struggle. With wide toes, narrow heels, fat (bottom to top), plantar fasciitis, and now a break in the left foot, my big feet are hard to fit. Even a shoe that seems fine in the store ends up hurting within a short period of time.
I can not tell you how many times I read and re-read this article, or how many times I searched anything you wrote about popular walking shoes. After ordering different ones and returning until I found the perfect pair for my *#@#^$*^# feet, my Vionic’s saved the day and pulled almost daily duty during our Italy/Greece/London trip last month.

Love sketchers, and Ecco for walking. I did take On Cloud Rogers to Italy and they were good. The leather was nice as it wiped off with a magic eraser and they looked brand new! I’ll never travel without a magic eraser!!
Wore my Ecco sandals exclusively in Italy for 17 days in Aug! They were amazing! I literally forgot they were on my feet!!!

Love Ecco sandals! I’ve had foot surgery and they give excellent support and expand when my feet are swollen.
I purchased the Taos, thanks to TFG, around the time I was traveling to Sicily. I knew there would be a lot of walking and these shoes worked great for that! My only comment is to size up half a size as they tend to run small in length.

I purchased the Taos Plim Soul Lux (white, leather) after reading about them from TFG. Although I needed to break them in prior to my trip, they worked perfectly for my summer vacation in Europe.

I love my Dansko Paisley shoes for fall/winter travels. For summer I like Vionic Winnie sneakers and my Aetrex Jillian sandals.

Shoes! The biggest problem of packing! For a one-week trip to my nephew’s wedding in Chicago, I have workout shoes (yes, have to work out!), Cariuma loafers for daytime, and 2 different shoes for the rehearsal and wedding. Feeling good that everything fits in a carry-on, so there!
I have learned so much from this group. I have also recommended this group to many of travel ladies. I have bad feet so I am always interested i what other feel are great shoes.

I have a few of these brands – Taos and Naot. My absolute favorite sandal ever, for walking lots of steps, is my Naot sandal. It’s a favorite of my two older girls as well – they live in theirs at college.

I value this information so much that I have applied it to my every day shoes as well. I am learning that I don’t need as much to be comfortable and fashionable. Quality versus quantity. However I am keeping a few shoes in the “sitting pretty” category–they aren’t for travel because honestly I can’t go too far in them but still love them (although if hubby had extra space, I might want to pack a pair just for a fun photo shoot sometime!).

Thanks for a great comprehensive list of comfortable travel shoes. I have one foot that is bigger than the other foot so it makes finding a great pair of travel shoes difficult.
So many great suggestions! I can speak to some of these. For reference, I have slightly wide, flat feet that are prone to hot spots and typically wear an 8 (sandals) or 8.5 (sneakers/boots.)
Vionic Kiera – sadly, Vionics do not work for me. The arch support is uncomfortable and these gave me hot spots. The sandals that are most comfortable for my feet are Crocs brand and Archie’s flip flops but I’m still on the hunt for my unicorn pair for heavy travel.
Cole Haan Crossform – On my second pair because I wore my first ones out. Love these shoes for general day to day use and can walk quite a bit in these. They do involve a break in period (I stretched mine with shoe stretchers and wore them with thick, tall socks to break in the back heel area). I believe both of mine are standard width.
Tao Stars – Wonderful shoes! I love the Taos sneakers I’ve tried in general. The inserts provided do not bother my feet and I can wear both normal width and wide width (this is preferred to accommodate any swelling due to heat). Will be taking these with me to Spain soon.
Blondo boots – I like these and do wear them, but I can’t walk long distances with them. Mine are standard width, got them on sale at Nordstrom Rack. Would prefer a wide width.
I want to give a special shout-out to Blundstone boots. They are THE most comfortable shoes I own and I have walked upwards of 20k steps in them. They are definitely an investment, but one I found was worth the cost.

I love the variety in the suggestions – from sandals with back straps to simple slip ons. I have found the Ecco sandals to run large, so although I like the look, sizing down puts the arch in the wrong spot for my foot. Naots are my ‘go-to’ choice. The fit is consistent.

I wore my Allbirds wool runners in Scotland and they were the perfect water resistant shoe. I get tired of traveling with heavy waterproof hiking boots!

I have older problem feet and Naot Mary janes have worked well for me but this is a great list for me to branch out.
My favorite walking shoes are Skechers!! The go-walk slip ons are extremely comfortable (surprisingly!!) with my bunion and high arches. We have clocked over 20k miles a day in Europe and these are the best!!
Just back from a bucket list trip to Scotland. We walked and walked and when we were done, we walked some more. Right before we left, I did a major no-no; I bought a brand new pair of shoes and took them on the trip. My new pair of Hokas were amazing. I had no trouble doing all this walking. The shoes were so comfortable it was hard to remember they were brand new. I did have several recommendations for the Hokas from folks who didn’t know each other and I’m so glad I listened. I guess the new rule should be, “Don’t buy new shoes for a trip unless they are Hokas!”

I’d like to add Mephisto shoes to this list. There are outstanding! So comfortable, particularly the summer sandals. I walked all day in Italy in my “Helens” and the “Lissandros” are perfect to wear with dresses or skirts to take it up a notch. Pointer: If you have room in your suitcase, pick up a pair while in Europe (Italy, France, Spain) because they are half the price as they are here in the States!

I needed some good walking sandals for trip to France and decided to give the Taos sandals a try. They were FANTASTIC! Was able to walk all over the place and not end of with sore feet. I also have a pair of the white Taos sneakers, but I have not worn them yet – I forgot them at home!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I bought the Ecco sandals based on this article for my six month stint in Europe and I LOVED them. Not only are they stylish, but very comfortable. Just look at the tan lines on my feet, I wore them a lot lol. Perfect for Barcelona, but a bit slippery for a place like Lisbon which had tiled streets. However, it handled my 20k step days no problem. Granted, I was just sore all over from sightseeing, but my feet were comfy. I’m looking to get more Ecco shoes for future travels.
Choosing the right shoes is so important for travel. I made the mistake of purchasing really good (expensive) orthotic sandals for our Mediterranean cruise. I didn’t know that I needed to wear them a little each day prior to going for my feet to get used to them. Ugh! They killed my feet and I ended up in flip flops all through the ruins of Turkey,Greece and Italy. I won’t make that mistake again. Thanks for great show suggestions. No more “shoes blues” for me.

As a woman with wide feet, I cannot recommend the importance of getting Wide sizes enough. I am a 10, 10.5 or 11 depending, and have often tried to make a regular width work. So thankful brands like Taos, Sketchers and Vionic (all faves) are listening and making cute and functional choices for us!
Rocked my Taos all over Paris and Italy this past summer and can’t wait to add more to my collection. Just listen to your mom’s voice in your head and try every pair on early and often. Leverage those 30-day try-on periods! Make sure it’s comfortable. If it’s not, you won’t wear it and you’ll have wasted your money!

I have tried so many shoes from this website. It was a great resource when looking for my Cinderella white comfy sneaker made for cobblestone streets haha. It’s not on this list (although it’s mentioned somewhere on the site I’m sure), but I ended up going with the Naturalizer Morrison Sneakers which have been a gem to have in my travel arsenal. Thank you for leading me to them!
I wish the joint on my big toe would cooperate so I could wear so many of these shoes. I do use your lists to narrow down to shoes I may be able to try. It’s hard to find non flex sole travel shoes. So far Birkenstocks are my go to.

Naot Kayla’s fit well and have taken me through Greece, Turkey, Italy and many US destinations. I bought a second pair after 10 years when the Velcro gave up and I couldn’t find anything that fit better. The Naot Sabrina is too loose on my foot, so try Kayla’s if you have a smaller foot profile. The Blondo boots are my go-to winter travel shoe I bought thanks to this group before a February trip to Italy. I now have 2 colors and always reach for them at home because they have a slim profile, look great with everything, are waterproof and still look nice after years of wear!

I bought the Blondo Villa boots for a trip to Italy in 12/2019 after reading your post on them. They are THE best boots. Never had an issue and they are perfect for December weather. I worn them another time when racing with my 9 year old son and he couldn’t believe his mom beat him while wearing heeled boots!

I agree! The best way to find that pair of unicorn boots or sandals is trying on lots of shoes. My wide toe bed and narrow heel keep the helper in the shoe department – of REI – busy!

Shoes are so important. This is so helpful and despite reading it before I went away I bought a pair of sneakers before going away but didn’t break them in first. What a mistake. They were Skechers but they weren’t a typical pair, more fashion then comfort and they blistered my foot the first day of walking. So just a reminder to wear your sneakers a lot before taking them away to make sure they hold up well.
Very helpful article. Plan on getting several of the pairs recommended over the next year. A good walking shoe is on the top of my list. Hate to stop touring aaron’s because my feet are hurting.
I’ve always had good luck with Vionic sandals. But as for sneakers I’ve always struggled. Having wide feet and Mortons Neuroma in both feet while walking all day in the wrong shoes can be so painful. I finally found a pair of shoes that worked, I just wish they were cute – New Balance 813 walking shoes in white.

Love your site!! My daughters bought me Merrill hiking boots for Christmas last year & I have worn them this year to Egypt, Jordan, & Scotland. Water resistant & wider toe area but they don’t slide around on my foot. They are not heavy either. Great for walking on cobbles, uneven surfaces, & are water resistant. I am a dedicated carry on advocate- carried on for my 3 week trip to Egypt & Jordan, & in the past (2010) carried on for a 2 week trip to China, 2 weeks to Russia, 2 weeks to Australia! Never any worries about lost luggage.

I’ve travelled with Teva leather sandals for years. I wore one pair for 15 years! Finally had to replace them but, of course, the model I like has been discontinued. I set up an alert in Kijiji and Poshmark. Months passed but someone eventually posted the exact sandal I was looking for in my size! Practically new! I’m sure I will get another 15 years out of this pair!
I also bought a pair of new, out-of-the-box Ecco sandals on Poshmark for a fraction of the price of new ones!
Can’t stress enough the importance of comfort over fashion, BUT so happy that I have found Taos – both comfort and fashion in one. A winner for my feet and confidence of looking nice while out and about!
Seems like I tried them all but settled on Aetrex sandals. Absolutely the best!
Thanks for compiling all of this info together into one spot. My favorite sandals for walking all day are the Clarks Cloudsteppers. They are super comfy- I wore them all day in Rome and not one blister. It was incredibly hot, but they kept my feet comfortable and cool all day.

Lots of good recs here, but I’m personally obsessed with the Ilse Jacobsen Tulip slip-ons. They are insanely comfortable and also stylish (so many fun colors!). I get so many compliments when wearing, and they’ve also held up for miles of walking in Europe, NYC, and countless other destinations. Bonus that they pack nice and flat in your bag!

I come back to this post everytime I want to try a new travel shoe! I have purchased three so far and they did not disappoint me yet!
I think finding travel shoes is the hardest part of packing for a trip. I am continually on the lookout for shoes that are sturdy, comfortable, and supportive while looking fashionable and being able to flex from day to night. Must work with capsule travel wardrobe and not be too heavy or take up too much space. Currently planning a 2 week trip to Italy next June using only carryon luggage. Thinking I need a pair of good walking shoes and a pair of sandals and maybe a pair of flip flops to wear in the hotel room. Already have a few of the pairs listed on your posts and continue to assess my options. Leaning towards a pair of perforated black slip ons and a black walking sandal. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I am a huge believer in Vionic shoes if you have any arch-related issues. I have had plantar fascitis in the past and have inserts that I need to wear. With the Vionic shoes and sandals I don’t need the inserts. I will say that I actually didn’t see very many white sneakers on our recent trip, natives wear what is comfortable for the cobblestone sidewalks and streets. Vionic tennis shoes come in white and I wore mine all the time. I took a pair of white sneakers and two pairs of sandals but I pretty much wore my Vionic tennis shoes.
Have significantly upgraded my shoe collection a sit relates to comfort thanks to TFG. Cute shoes are great for short wears but I love knowing I have some great long distance shoes for any weather – thanks!
Thanks to the advice found through this article I now use Sheckers for my everyday work life, Sorel boots in the winter and crocs in the summer time. I have my eye on a pair of Vionic and Blondo booties next.

Comfortable shoes are essential!! More than once I have taken shoes on vacation that I have worn around town (or even to work all day) and walking continuously them for a couple of hours gives me blisters. So now I try to take a 2-3 mile walk in shoes before taking them on a trip. 😊

I really appreciate your shoe reviews and recommendations! I have bunions which narrow my choices considerably but your reviews often help with that. I like running as well so one of my shoe choices has to be a runner. I currently have really ugly runners and hope to find a more attractive pair that could do double duty for sightseeing and look a bit stylish or at least neutral. I’ve gotten so many great tips here over the years. Packing cubes were life changing! I get such a thrill from being as minimal as possible when travelling now.

I have bought and returned or bought, tried, and rejected so many walking sneakers for European travel that will hold up through 30,000 step days. I wore Allbirds to Europe this summer and they did pretty well. The only ones above I haven’t tried are Vionic.
I bought the Taos leather sneakers after reading the review on this blog. They are super cute and stylish. They have fantastic arch support which is a must for me. The only thing I would say to people is that they are not super cushioned. It is more like wearing a supportive birkenstock as a sneaker. If you love a cushioned feel, the Cloud Form Adidas might be better. I’m going to experiment with slipping in a thin foot pad and see if that helps. Still would recommend though!

Comfortable but cute shoes used to be so difficult for me to find. Then I stumbled across TFG! I literally rely on TFG posts to find comfortable but cute shoes for everyday life…and travel to of course!! From this post, I bought the Taos Star sneakers. I wanted something casual that didn’t look like gym shoes. They are so much more supportive than I expected! I would recommend going up 1/2 a size though. Thanks TFG for the recommendation. Crocs makes two styles of heeled (platform style) shoes that are light and comfortable. One style is called Leigh. The other has the same footbed as the Leigh, but the ankle strap actually buckles. I prefer the all black shoes. I admit I wore them to Disneyland once. We met friends for breakfast in
downtown Disney and decided to join them in the park. They weren’t as comfortable as the Vionic flip flops or wedges I would normally wear, but they are very light and the platform style doesn’t strain your arches or put pressure under your toes.
Just thought I’d mention–Teva Freewheels are designed for cycling. The sole grips pedals nicely. I have two pair because in the spring, summer, and fall I go on a lot of trail cycling trips and don’t like clip-ons, and the Tevas are fantastic. Wearing them off the bike is just a bonus.

I like my Orthofeet walking shoes. They have a roomy toe box and orthotic insoles.
I have bunion. Try Archipedico. Chelsea Boot or Sneaks. Like slippers with a structured footbed. Boot 7 oz Ea. No pressure; no breakin. Using for Germany in Mid-March Elbe cruise-cobblestones, cold, and maybe rain. Carry-on only so light. Vegan too.
For bunion problems try Orthofeet or P. W. Minor brands. Both have removable footbeds (so you can insert your own orthotics for arch support) and come in extra wide sizes. Both brands have high and wide toe boxes, essential for people with problem feet. I had FIVE bunion surgeries before I discovered orthotics and these shoe brands. No more problems with bunions, for 18 years now.

Just got back from a Viking Rhine River Cruise and I have to say I learned a valuable lesson about shoes—bring your athletic shoes that can be worn with socks. It was really warm in most of the ports that we visited and my feet perspired making the skin soft enough to blister with my “comfortable” sandals. Socks would definitely have prevented this from happening. I was definitely jealous of those wearing athletic shoes and river sandals. No need to dress up with cute shoes; comfort is key. You will be walking a lot: 5 to 6 miles a day not including going up and down steps on the boat. Comfort, comfort, comfort.

I highly recommend the Yuu brand sandals for travel. I used them for 10+ mile days in San Francisco and during my three week honeymoon no problem. They also come in a variety of colors and styles. I got mine online from JCPenney.
I bought the Ahnu Karma Latitude Black Ballet Flat for a trip to Italy. Unfortunately, it rained the first day we were there, and these shoes took 3 days to dry! TERRIBLE travel shoes!!!

I’m trying to find shoes that will take me through several different climate changes in October-November first for cool fall temps in Korea, then slightly warmer temps in Hong Kong, then even warmer and humid weather in Bali and back to cool and damp in Vancouver, Canada so I’m at a loss to what I should pack. All these styles are simply divine but sticking to the 3 pair rule will be challenging to say the least. Any suggestions???

What about Tieks ballet shoes? I plan to use these for my walking shoes in the S. Pacific while on a cruise.

Women with high arches or the need for arch/back support don’t have great experience with them (or other ballet flats) as the main walking shoe.
I don’t know about these…I’m searching for serious walking shoes. Like 10 hrs / day walking. Many of these don’t look nearly supportive enough. A few are totally flat with no arch support. Maybe adequate to get from here to there but not for walking as the main activity. Some of the recommended brands I’ve seen mentioned many times so will give them a shot.
I have very high maintenance feet and have found the Dutch brand WOLKY shoes to be amazing, especially their Jewel sandal, which has an insert to mold to your feet, which can accept orthotics, and all three straps adjust with velcro. They also have good closed shoes and boots. On top of that , the patent versions of the Jewel and the caviar versions are adorable. I get compliments every time I wear them which is just about every day. I have them in all colors and wear them as soon as the snow clears, March to late November!
Mephisto Helens are the most comfortable shoes ever! I like them much more than Birks, and I’ve tested them out all over Europe. Highly recommended.

Every year we visit friends for 2 weeks in France and tour different areas. By far my favorite travel shoes are Fitflops. I’ve walked all over the place in them. Last summer when we were touring Provence I came a crosse a shoe store selling the exact pair I was wearing! The store owner and I agreed they were some of the most comfortable sandals we’ve worn. Now Fitflop sells loafers, boots and ballet flats and I plan to get some of those for walking in the fall & winter. You should try them!

have you found anything? I’m in a similar boat with plantar fasciitis. My feet hurt just looking at the shoes they have listed. I got some cheap Old Navy cloth sneakers that fit my custom orthotics while leaving the squishy insole in place. They are great for about 4,000 steps (according to my fitbit) before they hurt. I know we are going to be doing way more than 4,000/day in Thailand and Japan. And i will just have to deal with the pain on the beach with water shoes/flip flops. I want something that isn’t going to have me in agony the rest of the trip.

Birkenstock Kairo! (thong sandal with back strap) My all time favorite shoe. I’ve traveled in these shoes for the past five years. They work with skirts, shorts and pants…I’ve walked, biked, hiked and ridden Segways in them…of course they are super comfortable and supportive. They are harder to find these days…i just had my pair totally refurbished at a Birkenstock repair shop. (Those Avarca sandals are awfully cute though…havent heard of them before) In colder weather I like the Saucony low pro. I just spent a week in London and wore a pair of Adidas Neo sneakers. Hot, heavy and stiff! I wished for my Sauconys. I wore UGG leather boots for a trip to Quebec where it was icy and snowy and they were great.

I love my puma zandy flats, but they did start to stink after a while 🙁 For our upcoming trip to Paris and Croatia, I think I’m bringing black toms, black saucony low pro and my black teva olowahu flip flops! Hopefully those will cover my bases.
Sounds good! One point, you may want to consider a slightly more sturdy sandal than a flip flop. Also, most Europeans won’t be wearing flip flops outside of the beach! Just a tip, obviously wear what you’re comfortable in, that’s the most important!
I know!!! I might try to find something that’s more sandal than flip flop, but those suckers have great arch support so that I can walk well in them. I tried birks but the arch was in the wrong spot on my foot for some reason. Happy to hear any more recommendations!
Nothing works for me but New Balance wide running shoes. Thanks be to God for New Balance. I do have some Naot’s that aren’t hideous but I can’t go all day in them. I wear the cutest clothes I can find and not worry about how odd the shoes might look. Also, I remember to be grateful I have feet, not everyone does.

Hello! I loved many of these ideas for shoes, especially the Superga and Sperry ones. I’ve seen them before whilst travelling, but didn’t want to risk buying brands I didn’t know about when I needed shoes to last me for a lot of walking. However, now that I’m back in Mexico I can’t find them anywhere! 🙁 And they have such good reviews I really would like to try them as my next pair of “take me everywhere” shoes.

For stinky shoes or sandals, you can take used tea bags – let them dry out – then place in your shoes or sandals and let them sit overnight. The used tea bag somehow absorbs the foot smell, and the sandals or shoes are fresh the next morning! Even works on shoes that smell because you got caught in the rain!

None of these shoes were stylish. They were very nerdy . With the exception of the Superga tennis shoe, but I find them very heavy.
Sandals just don’t give very much support.

I would recommend Sam Edelman black flats. They are made out of leather, have a concussion sole, and go with everything (also cheap from Nordstrom rack). Also New Balance has some nice, dual purpose duty sneakers. Merrels look comfy but I never used them, so I ought to try. Hope that helped!

I just returned from a two week intensive walking tour of Italy. Lots of cobblestones and uneven roads. I took two pairs of shoes, one was a pair of metallic steel colored Taos sandals that has some Roman type bejeweled bling on the ankle strap. These had a velcro strap over the toe area and across the ankle. The adjustable straps are great if you swell due to difference in humidity from your home. Most of the women in my group suffered swollen feet, but with my adjustable straps i faired much better. My second pair was a pair of all terrain maryjane style shoes by Jeep. These were gray with pink trim. They also had an adjustable ankle strap. I am close to 60 yrs. Both these shoes were stylish yet very comfortable. I walked miles every day with no foot complaints at all. Both pairs had a cushy insole.
I would not reccomend wearing any shoe you have to lace up or encloses your foot too much. If your feet do swell it makes it more difficult to remove let alone put them back on.

Because of this blog, for my fall trip to Italy I bought Propet sneakers. I was surprised at how light they are.
Just came back from a 2 week Europe trip, suggest folks carry at least three types of shoes. My sketchers ballet walk shoes were good for 2 days if intense walking on cobblestone streets but started to pinch after 3rd day. Switched to nike black sneakers but sole was too thin, finally switched to flip flops to free up my fingers. So recommend 3 kinds if shoes, closed toe like sketchers, birkenstock or other comfort flip flop type shoes, and yes a good pair of trendy comfortable sneakers.

I’m going backpacking around Europe for 6 months. Would you still suggest three pairs for that, or do you think that it would be too heavy? I was considering a pair of running shoes, sandals, and stylish short boots for every day that are comfortable. As a 17 year old I must confess that fashion is very important in my choice of everyday shoes. I feel as if many of the choices above are for an older demographic.
Hi Aria, your three shoe choices sound perfect! People have varying needs for comfort so the shoes shown above are for those that require more support than most. Thing to keep in mind no matter what shoe you choose is that you have to be comfortable walking in them all day, avoid heeled boots as they can get wedged in between cobblestones (it happens), and the last thing is to avoid slippery shoes for the same reason – cobblestones are difficult to walk on and extra tough on your feet. I like the Keens sandals. They have a rounded covered toe, with an excellent arch support and durable tread. Plus they are waterproof and breathable. They are easy to walk in on any terrain.

Great list! I think I agree with Julianne Rains as far as shoes, but I will say that as cute as Supergas were, my toe started bleeding when I was breaking them in while running around Seoul. I do swear by Sperry top siders. I walked in mine all over France 2 years ago. I’m surprised I hadn’t seen Toms here, though. I walked in Toms everywhere in Shanghai, and as long as it’s not crazy hot, they’re very comfy and stylish to walk in! A big no, no I would say are Bensimmons. Bensimmons absorb heat from pavements, and if you walk around anywhere that’s humid and hot, your feet will get very, very hot!

I usually pack Chaco Sleet or Chaco Chari for my flip flops. They are cute and light, but are secure and comfortable for long days of walking. I use them for beach and shower shoes, too. If I need a cross trainer, I love my Teva Churn Evo shoes, which were actually designed for travelers. The Churns are a closed-toe light hiker with good traction, but they are water shoes, too. Perfect for airports, waterfalls, hiking, monsoons, zip lines, dive trips, temples and other adventures, plus they convert to a mule for easy on-off. They are actually cute and feminine. Depending on the trip, I might swap out my Teva Churn Evos for a pair of Merrell Glove barefoot sneakers or combat boots. For my third pair of shoes, I choose a pair for evening or cities, depending on my itinerary. That might be ankle booties, heels or embellished sandals. If I know I will be leaving my stuff unattended on a beach, I can pick up a pair of cheap rubber flip flops so I don’t have to worry if they go missing while I am in the water, or even pack these as one of my 3 pairs of shoes.
