It’s no secret that I love using this 4-piece packing cube set. They’ve helped me travel carry-on only even though I’m a full time traveler. From the US to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe – packing cubes have allowed me to maximize my minimal luggage space.
Follow my 8 step strategy to learn how to use packing cubes and travel carry-on only!
How to Use Packing Cubes
As you can see, how to use packing cubes to maximize space is to roll clothing and then use any additional gaps. By using my packing cubes for compression, this helps me make the most of less space – I never need full size luggage and neither will you!
The secret to traveling light is to create a functional but minimalist capsule wardrobe. Learn more in my guide!
Why do I love this particular set of cubes?
As you can see in the above tutorial, you can organize your belongings while making more use of limited space. Now, I’m sure you know this doesn’t mean you should pack a bunch of stuff you don’t need and weigh down your luggage. There are weight restrictions for carry-on baggage you have to consider.
However, using this technique will help you downsize your belongings with ease. You’ll be surprised to know how much you can actually fit into these products. You won’t need to check that bag after all.

Are they really worth the money?
With a price tag of roughly $35 for a set of four, I’d say packing cubes are definitely worth a try. I can’t travel without mine and many travelers feel the same way.
While it’s possible to use Ziploc bags to store your clothing, actual packing organizers have several more benefits and don’t cost that much more money.

So how do I avoid wrinkles?
For the most part I try to stick to fabrics that don’t wrinkle easily plus they tend to weigh less too. I hate wrinkles but hate ironing more so if fabric wrinkles easily, it’s usually a no-go in my wardrobe.

Compass Rose Compression Packing Cubes
What packing cubes do I use?
Throughout the past nine years of full time traveling, I’ve used various other brands including AmazonBasics, eBags, Pro Packing Cubes, Travel Wise, and Dot & Dot, too.
While these packing cubes all have their benefits, I’ve now created my own version that will take your organization to the next level: the Compass Rose Compression Packing Cubes shown above!
Watch the packing tutorial on Youtube!
In 2017, I launched Compass Rose Travel Accessories and my very first product was a 4-Piece Set of Carryon Packing Cubes. These are the only packing cubes sized to fit the exact width of a carryon suitcase and they also have a unique color-coded and numbered organization system – the only kind currently available anywhere on the market.
I put together a five-part YouTube series showing you the different methods to use packing cubes. If you use this specific packing strategy, they can also compress your belongings. This is the secret to traveling carryon only!

Hi! The cubes are currently unavailable on Amazon. Do you know when they will be available? Or is there another place to purchase them? Thank you!
Hi Amy, they should hopefully be back in stock in around 4 weeks. Unfortunately our products tend to sell out quite quickly, it’s hard to keep up. We’ll let you know as soon as they’re available. Thank you for your support ?
I bought the Compass Rose packing cubes to go on my trip to Europe. I love them – they are worth every cent I paid for them. My sister was with me when I packed and we were both amazed at how much could be fitted into them. I actually found that I didn’t have any real trouble with wrinkling. I carefully folded everything first then rolled them up. Considering how much they were compressed I expected them to be really wrinkly and in need of ironing, but I was wrong. I gave them a little shake and hung them up and smoothed the odd wrinkle out with my fingers. Really happy!
Yay, that is amazing Valerie, so happy that you love your compass rose packing cubes and that they helped you with your packing!!!! Thank you so much for all your support and I hope you had an awesome trip! Happy travels!
I’m 62 now and still traveling, mostly for work. I am using the Flight 001 packing cubes from Spacepack. The best thing for me, for a week long trip in one region, is that I can pack the first night and next morning into the first cube, and then I can leave the heavier checked luggage in the car or in the lobby. We typically don’t have time or availability of laundry so I have to pack some fresh things for each day. We work outdoors during the day and then like to change and go out for casual dinner.
Spacepack collapses nicely once it’s full.
The opposite zippered side is for laundry, this helps me keep it straight what I’ve already worn.
They have several cute prints and I have one of each so I can keep track of what’s up next. On my last trip I used a label maker to keep the cubes straight.
Great suggestions Lily! Thanks!
Great advice. I have never used packing cubes before but after reading this i have bought some. I am currently packing to go to Thailand next week and i have been amazed at just how much i can pack in these cubes and my case is so much more organised. I only wish i had come across them years ago!
That’s awesome! Have fun Lynne 🙂
THESE THINGS CHANGED MY LIFE!! I didn’t know about them before your video, Alex, and now I wouldn’t even think of traveling without them. I can fit my entire packing into about 40% less space now, which is a total game-changer as someone who is a touring musician and over half my suitcase has to be devoted to technical gear and concert equipment. Thank you!! 🙂
Yay!!!! Happy to know they helped you as much as they helped me 🙂
I totally helped my friend pack the other night. She has the Eagle Creek Cubes above and said there was no way that was all fitting in her luggage and carry on! Welp, we now have a believer on us! Everything fit perfectly for an 8 day trip in a large one, and all her workout gear into a small one. Love packing cubes! So thankful for your site!
That’s great to hear! Hope your friend has an amazing trip 🙂
I didn’t know about these cubes, Alex, what a great idea! Trying to travel carry on only is always a plus for me so I can go home to Spain often saving on the luggage fees. Then I can use what I save on makeup or shoes! ;D Epic win!
haha that’s how I packed all my gear at Blog Stock 😉
What do you use to tie the clothing? I’m worried that the tie will make a mark/crease on the clothes that will be difficult to get out
I don’t always use them but in this case I used hair ties. It’s better if you choose fabrics that don’t crease easily 🙂
