Most Cute and Comfortable Ballet Flats For Travel
As a traveler, one of the best ways to experience the world is on foot. You spend hours sightseeing, walking around, and trekking. But there is one major dilemma for female travelers: do comfortable and cute ballet flats actually exist?
What are the best travel flats?
While not suggested for all-day sightseeing, ballet flats are the perfect travel shoe to use instead of heels, they add a dressier touch to a neutral look, and use comfortably as part of your plane outfit.
Since choosing travel shoes is one of the most difficult aspects of packing, I shopped around and asked our readers what they thought were the most cute and comfortable ballet flats for travel. Not only did they share their tried and true picks, but most of them are under $100, so they’re budget friendly, too!
Read this comprehensive guide on how to choose the best shoes for travel.
What are the most comfortable womens flats?
When we asked our readers for their recommendations for the most comfortable travel flats, our audience delivered and shared their best shoes.
These are the brands our readers rated as having the most cute and comfortable ballet flats for travel:
- Hush Puppies
- Josef Seibel
- Cole Haan
- Tory Burch
- Yosi Samra
Most travelers agree that three is the magic number when it comes to packing shoes. Ensure that you bring at least one pair of comfortable walking shoes for travel that you can use daily for sightseeing and use your ballet flats as a secondary pair that you can use to create a polished outfit.
These are great options if you’re looking for the best ballet flats for walking Europe!
Select the best ballet flats for walking on your trip with our reader recommendations below!
Hush Puppies Chase Ballet Flats
These are the most comfortable black flats according to our readers, making them the best selling flats for travel!
Hush Puppies are synonymous with casual comfort shoes and now they’ve infused their traditional footwear features into the classic Chaste ballet flat.
This comfy flat features genuine suede leather sock lining with a breathable perforated arch in addition to the Hush Puppies cushioned triangle footbed pattern. The cushioned footbed conforms to your feet, providing air circulation, flexibility, and support.
A black ballet flat is a wardrobe essential and our readers also like the Cognac and Nude colors, too. If you’re not a fan of neutral colors, they have over forty colors and prints so you’re not short of options.
As a bonus, they have a wide range of sizing including narrow and extra wide fits, too. You just can’t go wrong with this choice. Buy it here!
Josef Seibel Pippa Black Ballet Flats
When traversing the beautiful cobblestone streets abroad, you need sturdy shoes that won’t slip or bend with every step. Look for travel flats with a firm rubber grip like the ridges found on the Josef Seibel Pippa.
Reader Karen says, “I took a pair of Josef Seibel and a pair of Merrell’s with me for a three-week European trip with lots of walking. I loved them and wore them for 10 years upon my return home before I finally had to retire them”. Talk about quality and long lasting comfortable flats!
Another reader Cindy also agrees, saying, “I love the comfort and style of Joseph Seibel’s comfy black flats. I wore them while touring, walking on cobblestones, going out to dinner, etc. and they, still look great.”
Our readers definitely vote these as one of the most comfortable flats for travel. They particularly love the comfy Black flats and Black Calk Kombi color is their second favorite choice. Buy it here!
Cole Haan Tali Bow Ballet Flats
For travelers looking to invest in a pair of quality shoes they can wear in the office and on the go, you’ll love the Cole Haan Tali Bow Ballet Flats.
They have a structured look compared to most comfortable flats, which creates a sleeker, more feminine style. The supportive rubber sole helps you walk on uneven pavement or cobblestone streets, making them perfect for trips to Europe. As a plus, they feature the brand’s Grand.OS footbed technology with a half-inch micro wedge for added lift.
This dainty bowed beauty rounds up the top three on our list of the most comfortable ballet flats for travel, beautifully combining fashion and function, especially for business trips.
Another popular style from from Cole Haan is the Elsie ballet flat.
One of our readers says, “I can speak from experience that the Cole Haan flats are great! I have a couple of pairs.” Buy it here!
Lucky Emmie Ballet Flats
Next on our list is Lucky Emmie – the best leather ballet flats. They’re not foldable but they are very flat making them incredibly packable.
They feature a rubber flex-sole and less than a half-inch heel, giving you just enough lift to keep your feet pain-free all day. While they don’t offer arch support, they do have a padded memory foam insole that provides a custom fit for light walking.
Our readers love the neutral Bourbon color shown above, but if the majority of the travel clothing you own is black or khaki, have a little fun and go for shoes in a vivid color or print to breathe life into your neutral travel wardrobe. As these comfortable ballet flats are available in over forty colors and prints, you’re sure to find one that matches your style.
One thing to note is that these shoes tend to run small and narrow, so you may need to size up half a size. As with all travel shoes, allow for a break in period before your trip. Buy it here!
Tory Burch Foldable Ballet Flats
For a higher-end option, Tory Burch also released their own collection of foldable ballet flats for travel. The Tory Burch Minnie Travel Flats have received nothing but praise and many women believe they’re the best ballet flats they own.
One of our readers commented, “I’ve always been a fan of Tory Burch flats but some Tory styles weren’t always super comfy. These new Minnie travel flats are perfect for travel but also comfortable. They have the female travelers jumping for joy.”
In case you’re on the fence about the expense versus comfort, TFG reader Daniella, shared, “I recently bought myself a pair of Tory Burch Minnie flats. It took me a while to take the plunge but I’m so glad I did. I wore them properly for the first time last night, and oh my days, they are like slippers. Worth every penny!” Buy it here!
Yosi Samra Samara Foldable Ballet Flats
Yosi Samra is the creator of the original foldable ballet flats and for under $100! The Samara Ballerinas are some of our favorite foldable flat shoes because they’re packable, made with real leather, durable, and comfortable.
Fashion publicist, Anna Rice, says, “I can pack five different colored pairs together in my bag and they only take up about six inches of space – perfect for adding a pop of neon or leopard print to an otherwise simple ensemble”.
The comfortable ballet flats are available in over twenty colors, textures, and prints, but we always opt for a stylish neutral like the classic snakeskin pattern shown above. Our readers also love this print, with their next favorite choices being the Pewter Metallic and Black Patent.
While they have a cushioned footbed, they don’t have arch support so it’s most recommended for women that don’t have foot issues.
FitFlop F-Pop Ballerina Leather Flats
You may be familiar with FitFlop for their comfortable sandals but now they have supportive flats, too. Offering more lift than a traditional flat, they also have a well-constructed sole made for hitting the pavement with ease.
Our readers are fans of the FitFlop Superbendy Ballerinas in Black or Blush for neutral, yet comfy ballet flats. They have a very supportive footbed although slightly less arch support than their sandals.
For a lovely neutral Leopard Print, try the F-Pop Ballerina Leather Flat. This popular style is close to selling out, so act quickly.
Reader Pei Lin says, “I’ve discovered FitFlops – sooooo comfortable. I can walk for hours, and great support, too.”
Another reader, Jeannette shares, “I walked all Italy and France in FitFlop, amazing! They’re super comfortable and provide support for those of us with feet problems. I have had seven surgeries on my right foot and three on my left and they’re great. I just purchased three additional styles for my upcoming trip.” Buy it here!
Clarks Neenah Garden Ballet Flat
We can’t have a list featuring comfortable walking flats without including a pair from Clarks. This brand always gets top marks when it comes to comfort.
Our readers absolutely loved their Grayson Erica comfortable ballerina flats but since it started selling out, we found a new alternative – the Neenah Garden Ballet Flat. It features an Ortholite footbed, stretch Gore upper, and lightweight, flexible sole. It has patent leather at the toe and heel for a dressier, more structured look.
Many women find them supportive and comfortable for all day wear. They do recommend breaking them in first and trying out a couple of sizes because Clarks’ sizing can vary.
Reader Kelly says, “Clarks have worked the best for me. I had the BEST gold pair ever. I wore them ALL day in Rome in the sweaty summer and while I still had to use a lot of bandaids and moleskin, I was impressed that they performed as well as they did. Of course they don’t make that style anymore. Lesson learned: if you find a pair of shoes you ADORE, buy more pairs before you need them in case they stop making them!” Buy it here!
Crocs Isabella Open Toe Flats
Some women swear by Crocs while others refuse to be seen wearing them. The brand has made some major design changes since their original comfort shoe was released, making them a solid option for travel.
In particular, the Isabella Jelly Collection of comfortable ballet flats and sandals has been incredibly well received by female travelers.
While you might think they’re only great for the beach or pool, we saw a tourist wearing the Bronze / Gold color in Paris and you would’ve never guessed they were Crocs (unless you were familiar with the brand).
She paired them with a nicely tailored outfit of a midi skirt and classic tee for a hot summer day touring the Eiffel Tower. She looks unbelievably stylish and comfortable!
Reader Stephanie told us that the Crocs Isabella flats are amazingly versatile and ideal for minimalist travelers packing for warm weather trips.
She says she’s used them as shower shoes, for sightseeing, overnight bus travel, light hiking, and temple exploring. They were also the ONLY pair of shoes she brought on her ten-day trip to Southeast Asia. These sound like very comfortable flats and incredibly versatile, too! Buy it here!
Merrell Mimix Haze Athletic Ballet Flats
Merrell gets top marks as a reliable and comfortable traditional travel shoe brand. With a firm, secure rubber sole and “Remember Me Foam” footbed, Merrell introduces the benefits of a comfort shoe into the timeless Mimix Haze Ballet Flat.
If you can get through the break-in period, you’ll find them to be the most comfortable flats for travel. As they mold to your feet, you might even feel like you’re not wearing any shoes at all.
While they’re not flats for walking, they’re a cute style when you need something for light days on your feet.
One of our readers says that comfy flats are her favorite shoes to wear when traveling, especially Merrell athletic ballet flats. She loves them!
This stylish pair is available in four colors but our readers prefer the Brown Sugar color. Buy it here!
Softwalk Napa Ballet Flat
Softwalk is another shoe brand that’s making a mark with their comfortable flats for walking. The Napa Ballet Flat style above comes in over ten cute shades, all of which are adorned with a small bow and subtle toe cap design.
These shoes have classic designs with a unique shock-absorbing footbed that minimizes pain and fatigue often suffered from extended hours of walking or standing.
They’re particularly popular with travelers that use narrow, wide or extra-wide shoe sizes. One of our readers, Sheila, says that despite having foot issues with ballet flats previously, the Softwalk brand is the one exception that works. Buy it here!
TIP: Remember, the best cute and comfortable ballet flats for travel don’t necessarily have to fold in half to be a good option. Flats are flat, after all; they can fit in any slim space!

You can create a soft and comfortable feeling in many shoes by adding your own padding. Whether they’re sneakers, boots, heels, or flats, add a padded insole to massively increase your comfort.
Everyone always asks me for the most comfortable shoes to wear in winter, and I always recommend boots. My secret is to add soft insoles to make boots even more comfortable!
Even during long promotional modeling gigs where I was required to wear high heels, I survived with specialty insoles for heels like these. For most other closed shoes, I use a style like these. You can also find a large variety of insoles to meet your needs on Amazon.
One of our readers sums it up with her recommendation: “Put inserts into your ballet flats and wear them around town for a day. If your feet hurt at the end, get better shoes. If not, party on”. Well said.
The next time you plan your travel shoes for a trip, don’t forget the easy-to-pack, removable shoe padding.
DISCREET SHOE LINERS
Even the most cute and comfortable ballet flats for travel could be improved by simply adding discreet shoe liners like those shown above. You can use them for sneakers, too. The best part is that they’re thin and pack small, so you only need a few on your trip; just hand wash them as you go!
How to Choose the Most Comfortable and Cute Ballet Flats for Travel
From my experience, the key to comfort is all in the padding. The most cute and comfortable ballet flats I owned were from Steve Madden and they had absolutely no sole but did have a nice layer of padding. Despite the fact that they were super flat, making the trek up and down the convention center for work was surprisingly a breeze!
While we never recommend you wear ballet flats as a sightseeing shoe, these can easily be the best travel flats for walking for moderate periods of time, especially if you don’t suffer from foot issues.
However, whether they are worn for sightseeing as opposed to other aspects of travel depends on the wearer’s comfort level. Some travelers require support so ballet flats don’t work for them for sightseeing while others have no problem with it.
Our list features ballet flats with a balance of style and comfort that are more comfortable than other options available.
