Table Of Contents
Wool is synonymous with cold-weather clothing, and short or long wool coats can be a winter staple, yet the perception is these kinds of jackets can be heavy compared to a lightweight rain jacket or a packable puffer.
For colder weather travel, the trick is to choose more lightweight and portable fabrics, so aim for merino wool or a wool blend coat, as those are less heavy. Ultimately though, the best way to reduce bulk in your luggage is to wear the heaviest item on the plane, so a wool jacket is perfect for this and will keep you toasty onboard!
When it comes to keeping warm overall, layering is the key to retaining body heat. By adding thermals beneath clothing and a merino wool sweater under a jacket; you can always adjust by removing a layer if you need to.

You can easily layer a sweater or hoodie underneath it if it’s particularly chilly; it’s just long enough to cover the back when you’re sitting down (perfect for a cold bench on a train platform) but not so long that it will monopolize your entire carry on when you want to stow it away. Anne Klein Women’s Classic Double Breasted Wool Coat
If you’re looking for a totally classic double-breasted style without the bulk, this Anne Klein wool pea coat might be the perfect fit for you. It has the standard eight-button front closure and traditional sleeve tabs, but it’s made from more malleable weight wool to make it easier to fold, pack, and stow when you need to.
Despite the fabric being a little thinner than other coats in this style, one woman confirms that it’s warm enough to not need an additional layer underneath for temperatures as low as 30º F.
This would work as the perfect compromise between being strictly a winter coat and an in-between seasonal jacket. It even has wool trench coat vibes too. “Loved it. Perfect fall jacket,” one woman commented, “not too heavy and not too thin.” Available in numerous, rich neutrals and sizes XS-XL.
Madewell Herringbone Courton Long Wool Women’s Coat (Regular and Plus Size)
With a subtle herringbone weave and on-point, contemporary style, this swingy Madewell maxi wool coat is perfect for even the most swanky locales. Cut in the shape of a cardigan, it’s meant to hang open, but it’s plenty large enough to pull or pin closed when it’s blustery out.
Though it’s designed with a very traditional-looking outerwear fabric and has very crisp tailoring—especially in the collar—the somewhat boho, baggy shape will help to hide any folds that have briefly set in from being tightly packed in your suitcase. And it’s meant to look a bit oversized, so it’s perfect for wearing multiple layers underneath when you need to, and the open front is the perfect frame for your favorite scarf.
Pendleton Stanford Plaid Wool Coat Womens
Designed with a spread collar and two front patch pockets, this Pendleton jacket will fit like your favorite jean jacket but is made with their signature wool. It’s warm enough to be a winter wool coat but light enough to throw on in the spring or fall over a t-shirt and not overheat.
Though Pendleton is famous for super thick, coarse wool blankets, the wool in this jacket is the complete opposite. “It is soft, warm, and feels like a nice cozy blanket,” reads one of the reviews, “except not scratchy like those old Pendleton blankets I remember.”
Despite the difference in fabric, you can expect the same quality from this jacket as you do in Pendleton’s other outerwear and accessories. This instant classic comes in sizes XS-XL.

A classic parka with some cool modern updates, this Icebreaker hooded wool coat womens style delivers a technical design in 100% felted merino wool, so it’s lightweight but still warm. It’s crafted with a quite slim, body-skimming style, so it packs up much smaller than other coats of this length when you need to store it.

It’s extremely lightweight and comfortable.” And bonus: it has plenty of zippered pockets to stow your passport, boarding pass, and other items you may need to access quickly. Comes in sizes XS-XL.

“This is a beautiful coat,” comments one reviewer, “I bought this because I have always wanted a “dress” coat.” This is available in two gray-toned shades and sizes XS-XL.
Fjallraven Kaitum Women’s Hooded Wool Coat

How to Clean Wool Coat
In general, wool coats will need to be dry cleaned. While there are some exceptions – and some people do attempt cleaning them on their own at home—dry cleaning will extend the life of your coat and prevent damage to wool fibers.
Thankfully, you shouldn’t have to do this too frequently. Most cleaning companies recommend having your wool winter coats cleaned twice a year: once when you get it out of storage at the beginning of the season and once more before you store it again for the summer.
If you notice small spots of dirt or dust, your best bet is to try using a fabric brush. This will dislodge any particulate matter and help release dirt from wool without damaging it with water. Just be sure to brush gently, as you don’t want to grind dirt further in between the fibers, as this could cause a permanent stain.
Put simply, when it comes to how to clean a wool coat it’s best to do a big cleaning twice a year and spot clean in between when necessary.
