What Are the Best Carry-On Suitcase Dimensions?
Most airlines set carry-on size limits at 22″ × 14″ × 9″, though some carriers especially budget or international airlines may be stricter. A suitcase that maximizes these dimensions gives you the most packing capacity without risking extra fees or forced gate checks.
Carry-on weight restrictions also vary. Some airlines don’t weigh carry-ons at all, while others (like many in Europe and Asia) enforce limits between 15–22 lbs. Choosing a lightweight bag can make a big difference, especially if you tend to bring laptops, shoes, or other heavier essentials.
Whenever possible, always double-check your airline’s size and weight rules before flying to avoid last-minute surprises.
Let’s further break this down the details with our handy suitcase sizing guide:
Domestic Airlines Carry On Luggage Size Guide
21 – 22” Domestic Carry On: This is the most popular size of carry on luggage and we guarantee you can travel anywhere with a suitcase this size here’s a step by step guide to how!
International Airlines Carry On Luggage Size Guide
18 – 20” International Carry On: Considered the international carry on size, this is ideal if you’re using budget European airlines like EasyJet or Ryanair. They have incredibly strict rules. Here is the best international carry on luggage!
Carry On Luggage Weight
The weight limit for carry on luggage can vary depending on the airline and the class of travel. Here are some general guidelines:
- Domestic Flights (within the same country): Many airlines allow carry on luggage weighing up to 15 to 22 pounds (7 to 10 kg). This weight limit includes both the bag and its contents.
- International Flights: For international travel, weight limits can also range from 15 to 22 pounds (7 to 10 kg) for carry-on luggage. However, some airlines may have different weight restrictions, especially for smaller aircraft or regional flights.
- Business and First Class: Passengers traveling in business class or first class often have a higher weight allowance for carry-on luggage compared to economy class passengers. It’s not uncommon for premium cabins to allow carry on bags up to 26 pounds (12 kg) or more.
- Variances by Airline: It’s crucial to check with your specific airline because policies can vary. Some airlines may enforce stricter weight limits or charge additional fees for overweight carry on bags.
- Personal Items: In addition to your main carry-on bag, most airlines allow passengers to bring one personal item (like a purse, laptop bag, or small backpack) that usually doesn’t have a specified weight limit as long as it fits under the seat in front of you.
Since airlines are becoming increasingly strict about baggage allowances, use a luggage scale to always ensure you meet weight requirements. Always verify the carry on luggage weight limits and any other restrictions directly with your airline before your flight to avoid surprises and ensure a smooth travel experience.

What to Look for in a Carry-On Suitcase
When investing in a carry-on, consider these important factors:
- Weight – The lighter the bag, the more you can pack without exceeding weight limits. Look for options under 7 lbs.
- Expandability – Many carry-ons include hidden expansion zippers for flexibility when bringing back souvenirs or extra outfits.
- Durability – Hard shells (like polycarbonate) resist dents and scratches, while high-quality softside fabrics (like ballistic nylon or polyester) can be lighter and more flexible.
- Wheels – 360° spinner wheels glide smoothly across airports, train stations, and even cobblestones, reducing strain while traveling.
- Handles – A sturdy telescoping handle with multiple height settings makes a big difference in comfort.
- Organization – Features like interior compression straps, zippered dividers, tech sleeves, or water-resistant compartments help keep everything in its place.
With the right combination of these features, your carry-on can become your go-to travel companion for nearly any trip.

FAQs: Carry-On Suitcases and What to Expect
Can I bring a carry-on for international flights?
Yes! Most international airlines allow carry-ons, but size limits are often stricter than U.S. carriers. Always check your airline’s policy before traveling.
Do carry-ons fit in overhead bins on all planes?
Generally, yes. Most standard commercial planes accommodate carry-ons, but smaller regional or budget airlines may require gate-checking larger bags.
Are hard-shell carry-ons durable?
Absolutely. High-quality polycarbonate and ABS carry-ons are lightweight yet strong, protecting your belongings while remaining easy to maneuver.
Can I pack liquids in a carry-on?
Yes, but you must follow the TSA 3-1-1 rule: containers no larger than 3.4 oz (100 ml), all stored in a single quart-sized clear bag.
Is a carry-on large enough for a week-long trip?
It can be, if you pack efficiently using techniques like packing cubes, rolling clothes, and using compression bags. For longer trips or bulkier items, consider checking a medium suitcase.
Will a carry-on fit in taxis or car trunks?
Yes! Carry-ons are compact and easily fit in most car trunks, rideshares, or under bus seats, making them perfect for city travel and short trips.

Great tips as always!
My Away Bigger Carry-On Flex is the best suitcase I’ve ever had. It’s roomy for a carry-on, I love the laundry bag, and the extra flap in the center that holds down clothes. One of these days I’m going to get a complete set of Away luggage.
I especially love the tips on how to pack the carry on luggage. I have learned to love packing cubes.
I’m shopping for my next carry on only adventure, and these suggestions have help tremendously to narrow my choices!
I’ve been following Fashion Travel Girl for years, and have loved the content!
Wonderful article. Looking for another carry-on suitcase. Would like another carry-on since I travel frequently. This article makes it easy to compare the many carry-on suitcases available. I know have a better understanding of which carry-on will best suit my needs . Thank you Travel Fashion Girl for such a helpful article.
I have been using the AWAY, bigger carry-on for three years for work and personnel travel and it has held up amazingly well. The hard shell has some scuffs but they are easily removed with the included magic eraser. The inside looks like it did when I purchased it – no fraying or wear on the straps and zippers. I have used this suitcase for a few day trip up to 2 weeks overseas – it fits more than I believed possible in a carry-on. It has been checked but mostly used as a carry-on. My one complaint is that it can get heavy when fully packed. I have purchased the Quince carry-on (AWAY dupe) but I have not used it yet (purchased for my son). It looks identical to the AWAY luggage and appears to be well made. Bonus – it is lighter than the AWAY suitcase.
Thank you, so helpful in choosing the best luggage for our needs.
I love my monos carry on. So many more to try!
These comparisons are super helpful! Although I still go back and forth between hard side and soft side!
Got a TravelPro 20″ in Burgundy, worked fine for a FL vacation & plan on using it for Mexico
Both my husband and I now use the IT carryon bags, the ones a bit smaller so they only weigh 3.75 pounds. Since Luthansa only allows 8 kilos, every ounce counts. Plus as a 74 year-old woman I can still lift it up myself for those trips when I am alone. This year we fly this way to Bulgaria, Serbia, and Romania.
Very helpful!! I’m 73 every once does count
This was so helpful! I bought a hard sided spinner based on your recommendation. Perfect for my trip to Ireland.
Have an amazing time in Ireland Liz!
I’ve been researching carry on luggage and 2/3 piece sets. I came across IFLY…. The reviews are impressive, plus it’ has a 20 year warranty.
My other two opinions I was considering is BÉIS and Quince….
Any thoughts???
This was a helpful post. I am still on the fence on whether to give hard sided a try. I also have been looking at Away v. Monos. I don’t see Monos listed here. Is there a reason?
I too am on the fence with hard sided. I see the pros and cons of both hard and soft. I think always having soft is part of my reluctance to try something new.
Do you recommend AWAY luggage?
Hi Sarah, I have personally never used Away luggage. I usually travel with the Delsey Turenne suitcase: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/delsey-carry-on-review/
It is popular with many of our readers, so if you have any specific questions about this luggage, then I would highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post your questions there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that love to share their awesome advice and feedback!
Hi Alex, I love your site! So helpful. I’m going to Italy in September and can’t decide if I should use one of my hardshell suitcases or get the Osprey Ozone. I’m very petite and worried about the cobblestone…but also carrying the backpack! Any advice is so appreciated.
Hi Lori, thank you so much for your lovely comment, so happy you love the site!! Have a look at this post for the pros and cons for a using a rolling bag or a backpack for some help in deciding which is best for you: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/backpack-or-rolling-bag-which-is-right-for-me/ Also have a look at TFG’s review of the Osprey Ozone backpack: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/osprey-ozone-46-review/ Hope this helps! Have an amazing time in Italy! 🙂
I have been searching for a new carry-on since my convertible backpack (with wheels) blew up in France in May. I will not be going back to a backup this time, just getting too old for that. I appreciate these posts and blogs because it helps me so much narrow down choices. Plus, it is always a roll of dice, when ordering online.
Thanks for allyou do!
Thanks Joy! Take a look at the latest post: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-lightweight-luggage/
Hey! I am trying to find a carry on that meets Icelandair’s 50x40x20cm (21.6×15.7×7.8in). standards, and I can’t even find a manufacturer that makes bags that size; even European makes are 55cm instead of 50cm. I really want to travel carry on only for this 5 week European vacay, but finding a carry on bag is looking impossible! Especially because some bags are listed by the seller as meeting those measurements, but then reviews prove they are actually bigger. I would really appreciate any suggestions you guys may have!
Hi Lauren, take a look at our latest round up to see if you can find one that works: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-lightweight-luggage/ most items featured are international carryon size 🙂
Thank you so much for this info! My husband and I are traveling to Switzerland in July for 10 days and want to pack lite. (I’m a chronic over-packer) I just bought the helium international carry on and I think it will be perfect! Thank you! Love your blog!
Yay! That’s awesome Leigh 🙂
I know I’ve read your post in a comment before (of course I can’t find it!), but what are you currently using as your rolling carry-on bag (non-backpack)? Do you use a different rolling carry-on for domestic and international travel? Thanks so much for your ever informative website, blog and newsletter!
Hi Vicki! I’ve been using the Osprey Ozone 22″ https://travelfashiongirl.com/osprey-ozone-46-review/ but I’ve just bought a few new carry-ons to test out 😉
has anyone used Hauptstadtkoffer cases?
researching a new case and they getting good reviews. doing some short European trips next year as based in UK and they seem to be recommended by airlines as fit the stringent baggage sizes we have
Hmm haven’t heard of them! I’ll have to check them out! Thanks for reading Linz!
I read this back in December, and now that I am in the market again for a good carry-on, I came back to check this post. The Delsey is very tempting.
This is exciting 🙂 I hope you find one you love
I’m saving up for a complete set from GlobeTrotter – but in the meantime, I’m going to stare at that Delsey suitcase until it comes to me! Thanks for the list!
Haha, yes it’s gorgeous!
