Key Features I Love About the 20” Getaway Carry-on

The Getaway is one of the most surprisingly high-performing carry-ons I’ve tested in a while. From interior organization to exterior resilience, it’s packed with thoughtful details that make traveling easier without the bulk or overdesigned gimmicks.

Sleek Design

From the start, I appreciated the structured yet minimalist look, especially in neutral tones that match the rest of my gear.

The finish has a subtle sheen (not too shiny) and holds up beautifully despite being tossed into overhead bins and dragged across different floors. I chose the French Pink color, which paired perfectly with my 28L Bagsmart Blast Backpack in Beige.

Streamlined Size

At 20″, the Getaway hits the sweet spot. 22” Inch carry-ons may be too large for some airlines, while 19” feels a bit limited in space.

The Getaway is compact, but still manages to feel surprisingly spacious. While it’s expandable, the dual zipped interior and compression sleeve on the right side has allowed me to fit an abundance of clothing, while keeping the suitcase at an airline approved width.

It also fits overhead with zero fuss even when placed sideways as is being required by many airlines.

Smooth, Quiet Spinner Wheels

Let’s talk wheels because if you’ve ever struggled to manoeuvre a heavy suitcase through a crowded terminal, you know how important this is.

The 360° spinner wheels on the Getaway suitcase rolled effortlessly on both smooth and carpeted floors. Even when I packed it to the brim, it didn’t tip, wobble, or feel heavy while rolling.

I wheeled it through NYC, across airport terminals, and carpeted floors without it catching or dragging.

Dual-Sided Interior Organization

One of my biggest gripes with some hard shell carry-ons is the open-style interior that allows your stuff to shift or spill out the second you unzip. The Getaway suitcase avoids that problem entirely.

It features two fully enclosed packing compartments: one side with a mesh zip panel and compression straps, and the other with two zippered mesh pockets and open space for clothing or bulkier items.

This is one of the most functional interiors I’ve used in a carry-on at this price point. Unlike most open-sided suitcases, the Getaway keeps your items secure on both sides:

Left side:

Two zippered mesh pockets, which are roomy enough for bras, undergarments, and accessories
I used this side to neatly store a floor-length gown, two pairs of shoes, and a few small bags for my business trip. Everything stayed flat and accessible without bulking up the suitcase or shifting in transit.

Right side:

Built-in mesh compression flap for clothes, documents, or other loose items
Adjustable compression straps to flatten bulk and secure everything in place
I packed 4–5 hanger-folded outfits here with no cubes, and they zipped up effortlessly. I also tucked in conference paperwork and accessories, and the compression flap helped keep everything smooth and organized.

Despite packing it full, the zippers glided closed with ease, a true test of a well-designed suitcase.

Compression Sleeve

This is my favorite feature of the Getaway suitcase. Even when I packed several outfits including wide leg jeans and a blazer using hangers instead of packing organizers the compression sleeve flattened them out much more than other luggage brands with this feature.

I thought I was going to have so much clothing that I’d need to expand the suitcase, but everything fitted perfectly. With room to spare!

The effectiveness of this feature is why I’ll be adding this Bagsmart luggage to my full time travel rotation.

Spacious Enough for a Full Set of Packing Cubes

As I began filming my YouTube video review of the suitcase, I was shocked that I could fit Bagmart’s entire 6-piece packing cube set plus a shoe bag inside the (non-expanded) suitcase. The set includes one large, two medium, and two small compression packing cubes.

Expandable Design = Built-In Flexibility

Even though I didn’t expand the suitcase for New York, I was happy to have the option when I headed to El Salvador. I needed a bit of extra space for some delicate home items I was bringing to my Airbnb, and the expandable zipper gave me just enough extra room without making the bag feel overstuffed. It still fitted easily in the overhead bin even when expanded.

This flexibility makes the Getaway great for travelers who want to leave space for souvenirs or who tend to pack more on the return trip.

Built-In + Lockable Zippers = Double the Security

I always appreciate when a suitcase offers both a built-in TSA-approved lock and lockable zippers. It gives me peace of mind, not just knowing my belongings are more secure, but also knowing that if I ever forget my combination, I can still lock the bag using a separate luggage lock.

Durable Exterior That Cleans Easily

I’ve been burned by too many suitcases that scuff the first time they hit the overhead bin. But this one? I was pleasantly surprised. Despite some rough handling on my part, it barely showed any wear, and the few marks it picked up were easily wiped away with an eraser cleaning sponge.

Comfortable, Sleek Handles

Both the top and side handles are comfortable, sturdy, and give the bag a well-balanced feel when lifting or adjusting in tight spaces.

Whether I was pulling it out of an overhead bin or lifting it into a car trunk, the suitcase felt surprisingly light and solid.

The dual handle felt sturdy and had several lengths, including a shorter one, which worked well for me at just 5’2” and the longer one, which worked comfortably for my 6’5” partner.

I prefer carry-ons with dual handles because it makes it easier to place a personal item with a trolley sleeve on top of it without worrying about it flopping over.

(No) Built-In Charging

There is no USB port or digital luggage scale built in, but that’s actually a plus now as the airlines have recently changed their policies about bringing portable power banks onto planes.

Personally, I prefer suitcases without these items because these features aren’t absolutely necessary and they make luggage heavier than they need to be.

Final Verdict: Is the Bagsmart Getaway 20” Carry-On Worth It?

Absolutely.

The Getaway Carryon is a smart, polished carry-on with practical features and a travel-friendly build that genuinely makes travel easier. From the thoughtful dual-sided interior to the smooth spinner wheels and secure locking system, it hits all the marks I look for when choosing a suitcase.
